Be careful. Make sure all your files in that folder are acceptable signature files. ** WARNING Autograph only works with Eudora. If you don't have Eudora, give up. If you don't know what Eudora is, give up. You also need System 7. ** WHAT IT DOES Not much. It changes your signature in Eudora. You can drag and drop a text file onto Autograph and it'll change your Eudora signature to that. If you tell it to make a TEXT file into a signature, the next time you double-click on the file, the signature in Eudora will be changed to it. The idea is to have a folder of signatures, any which one can be double-clicked on to change your signature. Drag the whole folder over Autograph if you want Autograph to pick a random one. Oh yeah, if Eudora happens to be running when you double-click one of the signatures, it'll switch back to Eudora. ** WHO? waffler@citr.ee.mcgill.ca OR davidk@citr.ee.mcgill.ca [Archived as /info-mac/comm/net/autograph-for-eudora-10b6.hqx; 42K] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1993 21:03:54 -0800 From: Eric Shieh Subject: [*] binary-pump101.hqx Ever download a file, only to have it appear as a generic binary file? Note that this is only "1.1fc", the "final candidate". Some bugs remain to be fixed before the final release, which will be mailed to all registered customers in a few weeks. (And yes, currently it takes up to two months or more for them to reply to your registration and send out the unlock code -- they're swamped.) One of the more interesting bugs is that in the "Air to Air" training mission, when you start the mission on your carrier, you'll see another F/A-18 in front of you -- balanced on its nose. It falls over and sits there blocking the runway; destroy it with your cannon to blow it out of the way so you can take off. I have included a couple of externals of my own. Others should feel free to add to this package. Just include a folder with your external and a brief readme and then re-upload this package (after incrementing the version number of course). I use Reflection 2+ (ver 3.6.2) from Walker, Richer, and Quinn to emulate a vt320. The only program I have that causes any problems with Reflection is SoftPC Pro version 3.1. I don't use that program very much so I don't have much of a problem with cooperative multitasking vis-a-vis downloading, or my term program. Usually I'm running at least 4 or 5 different programs while reflection is doing it's thing--sometimes two or three times that many. I up/down load all the time over a serial connection at work at 19,200 baud and the only thing I have to watch out for is SoftPC. Wouldn't you know it'd be a peecee thing that causes the problem? ;-) (I'm talking here about good comercial and shareware apps here--obviously you might have problems playing some games, etc... while downloading with any program.) I'd suggest trying another term program before anyone jumps to the conclusion that you can't effectively multitask with the current cooperative multitasking scheme. We'd all like to see "real multitasking" on the Mac, but even multifinder worked fairly well. In fact, I remember thinking that beyond the application menu, system 7 really didn't add much to multifinder's multitasking abilities. If Apple does come out with a preemptive system (there are rumors about this) I will stick with the current system unless they can do it without breaking any of my apps. It sounds like zmodem, microphone, some old modem cables, or maybe some setup files is the problem. I'd think you would have little trouble with versaterm, reflection, or probably the new Sitcom program (or even Kermit). PS. On a related note, Reflection works very well with our IBM mainframe too, since the MF supports vt terminals. Proprietary download protocols work only on the vax as far as I know (no host app on the ibm?) but transfers go considerably faster than zmodem, much faster than Kermit, and are very easy to perform.) I just tested this, because I couldn't believe it. Comes up selected in both Find and Find&Replace dialog boxes. I tried calling them up using both the mouse and the command-key equivalents. Worked for both. I checked the preferences to see if maybe there was some weird flag I've got set that makes it work right. There weren't any that I could find. I made several attempts to do that, all unsucessful. Strangely, I noticed that the Newton claimed that it's system version was not 1.0.2, or 1.0.4, but 1.1.1. Very strange. What is 1.1.1? I learned that my Newton will not accept an upgrade to the "newer" version 1.0.4 because version 1.1.1 is functionally equivalent. (1.1.1 apparently indicates that 1.0.4 is burned into the Newton ROMs. At least now I know that MacZone sent me a new unit! :-) I called 1-800-SOS-APPL this morning and suggested that the Newton (or the Mac) should give some indication that upgrading isn't necessary. (Instead, the Mac says that the upload was successful while the Newton simply says, "Waiting for response."--not very user friendly.) Doug, on the Apple Assistance Line, said that there have been a number of complaints about this but he isn't sure that Apple plans to do anything about it. (Translation: Apple does not intend to do anything.) It's reassuring to see Apple's consistency. They won't fix the bad mice on the Mac, the busted screens on the PowerBook or the sound cutoff problem on the IIsi. Now Apple carries this tradition to the Newton! :-( Jeffrey Fritz West Virginia University jfritz@wvnvm.wvnet.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Jan 1994 10:23:04 EST From: bouldin@anvil.nrl.navy.mil Subject: Nisus "dongle"? Huh? Hardware copy protection!?! (Q,C) Do I understand from the last infomac post that Nisus with the full worldscript package is *_hardware_* copy protected?? ARGH. Aren't vendors over that kind of nonsense?? Did I misunderstand, or are they really that silly? If it is hardware protected, what is it; that dingus that hangs out of a serial port? I've seen that advertised for years, but never actually heard (until now?) of any major app that uses it. This won't last beyond the point that all the other competitors get full worldscript going, and you can bet that most users will wait rather than live with this mess. I've used a Mac since 1984, and *every* time something like this has been attempted, the product has failed in the marketplace, usually being overrun by other products from competing companies that have more sensible policies. I purchased the OED several months ago for the list price of 495 English pounds plus sales tax from Heffers in Cambridge, England. Their vitals are: Heffers Bookstore 20 Trinity Street Cambridge, England CB2 3NG Fax: 44-223-410-464 Tel: 44-223-358-351 and they are VERY good. It is a wonder of our modern age that the entire OED is on one CD-ROM and access is FAST. To give you an idea of what this means I noted a question several weeks ago about how to describe Info-Mac dialogs on mac software and related topics. In short, how to describe Internet Discourse. Some wag replied that "intercourse" would be appropriate. Here is part of what the OED has to say about the verb "intercourse": 1. Communication to and fro between countries, etc.; mutual dealings between the inhabitants of different localities. In early use exclusively with reference to trade, and hence sometimes = commerce, traffic; now in more general sense. 2. Social communication between individuals; frequent and habitual contact in conversation and action; dealings. 3. Communion between man and that which is spiritual or unseen. 4. Continuous interchange or exchange of (letters, etc.). Not a bad description of Info-Mac, right? Further, several weeks ago someone asked about fonts for ancient (antique?) Greek. The installation of the OED requires the installation of several unusual fonts including one called "Porson Greek OUP". I suspect that this is the desired ancient Greek font. I do not know if the font can be purchased separately from the OED. I work for CompUSA and we got an evaluation copy and put it on the Q800. Unfortunately, even though there are no inits (a selling point made clear on the box), there still is garbage left behind on occasions when dialog boxes disappear. It seems to be a nice program otherwise, but the one VERY obtrusive thing is that it can not export to any file format, much like the Control Panel Wallpaper. But, with Wallpaper, there are at least two utilities that can convert its file format to a standard ppat that I can use in a more reliable program. I would LOVE to see one for Screenscapes. Yes here I am, back an absence of 5 years, and...I must say I'm not particularly happy to be back at all. But that's life. At least I am starting work soon, and may be able to get back on the net via some local address rather than telneting to Bristol when I happen to be at the National University of Singapore or (shudder) modeming to the UK, which I have done several times at my own expense... Anyway, rather than bore you with sad tales about life here or the immaturity of the computer trade (I know your LCs and hard disks may well have been assembled at factories here, but that doesn't mean our marketplace understands Macs or any other type of computer very well!), I need to put a question to the collective wisdom of the net. I am having problems with TextEdit-based programs on my new LC475. I have US system software, with Arabic as a secondary script. I find that a number of operations will cause the Finder to crash and restart in an endless loop, after which the only thing I can do is reboot the machine. These operations include: (1) Using the Text control panel. (2) Typing in Arabic (but English works fine) in a TextEdit-based application. Problems don't arise with the same applications on the other Macs I've used. (3) Pasting English text from (say) ClarisWorks into a text editor. If I try to use the Arabic-specific control panels I can get a similar crash, or (even more inexplicably) a 'coprocessor not installed' error message. I even get these problems if I boot the Mac off the Arabic Disk Tools floppy (with the appropriate System Enabler added of course). Any ideas what could be going wrong? Is there a known conflict between the LC475 software and WorldScript? Kindly e-mail me directly as for the time being it will just be too difficult (not to mention expensive) for me to read or contribute to any usenet news at all.
